A Tribute to Dr Stephen R Covey

In memory of the late Dr Stephen R Covey, an internationally recognised authority on leadership, here is a short tribute to his iconic book on ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’, an inspirational must-read for anyone seeking to improve their professional and personal lives.

In 7 key areas, Dr Covey identifies the habits which will lead to more effective leadership within work and greater control over our personal lives. These habits are:

1. ‘Be Proactive’ – Take responsibility of your life
2. ‘Begin with the end in mind’ – Visualise who you are and what you want out of life/work
3. ‘Put first things first’ – Organise and manage time/events in order of priority
4. ‘Think win-win’ – Focus on agreements/solutions which are beneficial to all concerned
5. ‘Seek first to understand, the to be understood’ – Learn how to listen to others in order to truly understand and communicate effectively
6. ‘Synergise’ – Embrace teamwork and creative cooperation
7. ‘Sharpen the saw’ – Focus on self-renewal and leading a balanced life

In the constant challenges of hotel and restaurant management, it is essential that managers can effectively handle the pressures the hospitality and catering industry puts on them, whilst setting the example of effective leadership to their teams and getting the best out of their teams. Adapting these habits, and great business advice, in to your professional and personal life can work wonders in being a more effective leader and manager, whilst living a more rewarding and satisfying life. Your business will reap the rewards of more effective management, customer service will be enhanced, team development and teamwork will improve, and the all-important work-life balance will be better achieved.

Never has there been a better time to focus on leadership and management development, to meet the challenges of this current economic climate!
