Case Study: Vittles Cafe

Vittles is an independent café located in a popular suburb of Sheffield. Although trading in one form or another as a café, restaurant or bistro for the last two decades, the business had recently changed ownership. The new owner was keen to make some much needed improvements, to enhance the success and profitability of the business.

cena was brought in as a management consultancy to support the new business owner in making necessary changes. From initial consultations to listen and identify their needs, we were able to put together a plan of action and mentor the owner to overcome issues in team performance, legal compliance and profitability.

Employee engagement was driven through 360 degree feedback, improved empowerment and team building activities. Guidance was provided in recruitment and induction procedures to further strengthen team performance. The empowered team embraced and contributed to new and innovative ways of working, influencing new menu items, identifying and supporting new revenue streams and supporting improvements in overall standards.

To enhance legal compliance, an overall audit of the health & safety and food safety procedures was implemented. These activities resulted in an improved structure to daily duties, more effective monitoring, greater due diligence and a 5* hygiene rating at the next food safety inspection.

A coaching role was provided to support the business owner, offering advice and guidance when needed, and sometimes as just pair of ears for listening and sounding off ideas. Advice was given in areas such as team leadership and performance management, refurbishments and product development.

Following on from the initial project, on-going support has been provided in areas of team leadership, performance management and in providing a continual source of reassurance and assistance. The business has seen positive revenue growth, a high level of team retention and consistent positive customer feedback.
